Week 4 - 02/02/2026 to 02/06/2026
Welcome to the fourth week of my internship under the New Smyrna Museum of History (NS MOH) at the University of Central Florida (UCF). In-between Friday and Monday, I watched the 2026 National Hockey League (NHL) Stadium Series game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins around 6:30PM on Sunday (February 1) at my brother's apartment. Tampa Bay won 6-5 after being down 5-1.
Monday (February 2) was the sixteenth day of my internship, and I did some more metadata work, which basically requires that each scanned newspaper page has their information such as volume and page number recorded in an Excel document. This also happened with the internship I mentioned a few weeks ago but under different circumstances. I recorded many lines of data while also taking a coffee break at Foxtail Coffee in the John T. Washington Center.
Tuesday (February 3) was the seventeenth day of my internship, and I scanned many newspaper pages after proposing daily work alternation for me and the other team members. As part of that, I would do metadata work on Mondays and Wednesdays, and scan work on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Later on, Nathan Gregg noticed some .jpg files were missing which caused him and me to panic. One interesting ad I noticed was on page fourteen of the 12/20/1956 edition of 'The Pelican' that advertised sports gifts for everyone such as hunting vests, 'The Sport Center' being the advertiser.
Wednesday (February 4) was the eighteenth day of my internship, and complications arose when I noticed more .jpg files were missing. This interfered with my metadata work, so I decided to download each .tif file and fill in the lines of data one at a time. Dylan Gilberg on the other hand had to deal with a keyboard issue, the problem being that more batteries were needed due to its wireless nature. Another interesting add I noticed was on page eleven of the 7/1/1954 edition of 'The Pelican' that advertised pets for sale such as monkey, 'Paradise Pet Shop' being the advertiser.
Thursday (February 5) was the nineteenth day of my internship, and after an issue with the scanner where a new session could not be started after another one had already taken place, I chose to do more metadata work instead. Nearly ninety newspaper pages had been scanned in that previous session, so it was not an awful situation. Unlike Monday, there was no coffee break.
Friday (February 6) was the twentieth day of my internship, and I was not in the office due to my schedule. I had my second lab online because of flooding in the room (Engineering 2 Building - 0187) where it would have taken place, so I made sure to not waste time and complete it as fast as possible.
Have a good day and thank you for reading this blog.
